Comunicadoras Comunitarias para el Buen Vivir, supported by the Sustainability Demonstration Center and the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture and Youth, is a project which empowers women in the Province of Puntarenas to espouse topics important to them – such as human rights, the health of people and the environment, and women’s access to education and employment opportunities – through radio communication. The Comunicadoras are a collective of women learning how to express themselves through radio communication. The project focuses not only on the technical components of radio communication, but also on developing and communicating content that is relevant to community experiences. As Costa Rica's telecommunications laws enable monopolies to exist, the practice of community radio is an important part of not only inspiring discussion of important topics, but also in connecting communities through shared ideas and experiences.
Throughout this year long program, over 20 women from the Puntarenas province and two facilitators from San Jose joined together to learn how to communicate important subjects through practicing public speaking skills, creating radio content, inviting guests for interviews, learning all of the technical components of radio communication, and supporting the efforts of each individual women and the collective group. The Comunicadoras brought the radio program to several communities, including Guacimal, Cooperative de Mujeres Manzanillo, Casa de Cultura Esparza, and Plaza del Pacifico Puntarenas. Even though the Puntos de Cultura 2018-2019 projects have closed, the collective still communicates! So far, we have conducted radio programs from Hospital Mon Senor Sanabria Puntarenas and Isla Caballo in the Gulf of Nincoya. Our perseverance to communicate important topics and cover community stories runs strong, and Radio Andante intends to continue our efforts to make our voices heard!
